Sciatica Explained
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a type of pain that starts in the lower back and travels down into the hip, buttock, and leg.
It happens when the sciatic nerve — the largest nerve in your body — gets irritated or squeezed.
The sciatic nerve:
- Starts in the lower spine
- Runs through the hips
- Goes down each leg
When it’s irritated, it can cause:
- Sharp or burning pain
- Tingling
- Numbness
- Weakness in the leg
Sometimes the pain can be very strong.
Why Is Sciatica a Big Problem?
Sciatica can make it hard to:
- Sit
- Stand
- Walk
- Work
Some studies show that people with sciatica:
- Miss more days of work
- Have more disability than people with regular back pain
- Are more likely to be given strong pain medicines (like opioids)
Because of this, doctors are always looking for safe and effective treatments.
A Study on Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica
At a hospital in Norway, researchers studied 44 workers who had severe sciatica pain.
All of them:
- Had pain for at least 3 weeks
- Were in enough pain to need hospital care
- Had MRI or CT scans
- Did not show major structural damage on their scans
What Treatment Did They Get?
A hospital chiropractor examined each patient carefully, including:
- Checking posture
- Watching how they walked
- Testing how far they could move
- Feeling (palpating) the lower back
The main treatment involved:
- Gentle joint adjustments in the lower back and pelvis
- Adjustments to other areas if needed
- Ice after treatment to reduce soreness
While in the hospital, patients were treated daily.
After that, they were treated about 3 times a week for 2 weeks.
Most patients received no more than 14 treatments.
What Were the Results?
The results were encouraging:
- 40 out of 44 patients (91%) returned to full-time work
- They returned in about 21 days on average
- Normally, people with sciatica in Norway were out of work for about 72 days
That means patients in this study returned to work much faster than expected.
Two patients returned to work part-time.
Researchers suggested that teamwork between orthopedic doctors and chiropractors helped improve recovery time.
How Might Chiropractic Help?
When joints in the lower back don’t move properly, muscles around them can tighten and stay tight.
Chiropractic adjustments may:
- Improve joint movement
- Help relax tight muscles
- Reduce irritation around nerves
- Improve how the spine functions
When the spine moves better, pressure on the sciatic nerve may decrease.
The Big Idea
Sciatica is painful and can make everyday life difficult.
This study suggests that chiropractic care may help some people with severe sciatica return to work faster and improve their function.
However:
- Not every case of sciatica is the same.
- Some people may need different treatments.
- Always talk to a healthcare provider about the best plan for you.
Taking care of your spine, staying active, and getting the right care can help keep your back strong and healthy.
