High Blood Pressure Explained
What Is High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure is also called hypertension.
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against your blood vessels as your heart pumps. If that pressure stays too high for a long time, it can hurt your:
- Heart
- Brain
- Kidneys
- Blood vessels
Doctors measure blood pressure using two numbers, like this:
120/80
- The top number = pressure when the heart beats
- The bottom number = pressure when the heart rests
If the numbers stay too high, a doctor may diagnose hypertension.
How Do Doctors Usually Treat High Blood Pressure?
Many people take medication to lower blood pressure.
In the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets rules for approving new blood pressure medicines. A drug must lower blood pressure by a certain amount and not cause serious side effects to be approved.
But researchers have also studied whether other treatments might help.
What Does the Neck Have to Do With Blood Pressure?
At the very top of your spine is a small bone called the atlas (also known as C1). It holds up your head.
Unlike other spine bones that lock together, the atlas depends mostly on muscles and ligaments to stay in place.
Some researchers believe that if this bone is slightly out of alignment, it might affect nerves near the brainstem — and possibly influence blood pressure.
A Study About Chiropractic Care and Blood Pressure
Researchers at the University of Chicago studied 50 people who had Stage 1 high blood pressure.
Here’s what they did:
- All patients were checked to see if their atlas (C1) bone was slightly misaligned.
- Half of the patients received a gentle chiropractic adjustment to correct the atlas.
- The other half received a “sham” treatment (it felt real, but no actual adjustment was done).
- Blood pressure was checked over 8 weeks.
What Did They Find?
The group that received the real chiropractic adjustment had a noticeable drop in blood pressure.
Before treatment (average):
About 147/92
After 8 weeks:
About 130/82
The group that did not receive the real adjustment did not improve as much.
Researchers said the drop in blood pressure was similar to what might be seen if someone were taking two blood pressure medications at the same time.
Also, about 85% of the treated patients improved after just one adjustment.
What Does This Mean?
This was a small study, and more research is needed. But it suggests that correcting certain neck misalignments might help some people with high blood pressure.
It does NOT mean:
- People should stop their medication without talking to a doctor.
- Chiropractic care replaces medical treatment for everyone.
But it may be one helpful part of a larger health plan.
Important Things to Remember
High blood pressure can also be improved by:
- Eating healthy foods
- Exercising regularly
- Reducing stress
- Getting enough sleep
- Following a doctor’s advice
How Can a Chiropractor Help?
A chiropractor may:
- Check spine alignment
- Look for possible atlas (C1) misalignment
- Provide gentle adjustments
- Encourage healthy lifestyle habits
If something serious is found, they will refer the patient to a medical doctor.
The Big Idea
High blood pressure is a serious condition, but there are many ways to manage it.
Some research suggests that correcting certain neck alignment problems may help lower blood pressure in some people. However, it’s important to work with healthcare professionals and never stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.
Taking care of your heart, spine, and overall health can help keep your body strong for years to come.
