Neck Pain

What Is Your Neck?

Your neck is also called the cervical spine. It starts at the bottom of your skull and is made up of seven small bones stacked on top of each other.

Even though they’re small, these bones hold up your head — and your head weighs about 12 pounds (about the same as a bowling ball!).

Your neck can move in lots of directions — up, down, side to side, and turning around. That’s awesome because it helps you look around. But because it moves so much, it can also get hurt more easily.

Why Does Neck Pain Happen?

Neck pain can happen for many different reasons. Here are some common ones:

1. Injuries and Accidents (Whiplash)

If your head suddenly jerks forward and then snaps back (or side to side), it’s called whiplash.

This can happen in:

  • Car accidents
  • Falls
  • Sports injuries

When this happens, the muscles and tissues in your neck can stretch too far. Your muscles might tighten up to protect you, which can make your neck feel sore, stiff, or tired.

2. Getting Older

As people get older, parts of the spine can slowly wear down. Some common problems include:

  • Osteoarthritis – The smooth covering on joints wears away, which can make movement harder.
  • Spinal stenosis – The tiny spaces where nerves travel get narrower and can pinch nerves.
  • Degenerative disc disease – The soft cushions between the bones of the spine lose height and flexibility.

When nerves get squeezed, it can cause:

  • Pain in the neck
  • Pain in the shoulders or arms
  • Tingling or numbness

3. Everyday Habits

Neck pain doesn’t just come from big injuries. It can also happen because of daily habits like:

  • Slouching while using a phone or computer
  • Sitting for long periods
  • Carrying heavy backpacks
  • Stress (which makes muscles tighten)
  • Weak stomach muscles that don’t support your posture

Bad posture can make your head lean forward, which puts extra strain on your neck.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor is a doctor who focuses on the spine and muscles. They try to help people feel better without using surgery or strong medicines.

What Happens at a Visit?

The chiropractor will:

  • Ask when your pain started
  • Ask what makes it better or worse
  • Check your posture
  • See how well you can move your neck
  • Gently feel your spine and muscles
  • Test your reflexes and strength

Sometimes, they might order tests like:

  • X-rays (to look at bones)
  • CT scans or MRIs (to look at discs and nerves)
  • EMG test (to check how nerves are working)

If the chiropractor finds something serious (like a broken bone), they will send you to a medical doctor or specialist.

What Is a Neck Adjustment?

A neck adjustment (also called cervical manipulation) is a careful, controlled movement done by the chiropractor to help the joints in your neck move better.

After an adjustment, people often notice:

  • It’s easier to turn their head
  • Less stiffness
  • Less soreness
  • Less pain

The chiropractor might also suggest:

  • Gentle exercises
  • Stretching
  • Massage
  • Posture tips

Does Chiropractic Care Work?

Studies have looked at people with long-lasting (chronic) neck pain. Many of them reported less pain and better movement after chiropractic treatment. Some studies showed improvement lasting up to 12 weeks after treatment.

The Big Idea

Your neck works hard every day to hold up your head and help you move. Because it moves so much, it can sometimes get hurt or sore. Good posture, staying active, and getting the right care when needed can help keep your neck healthy and pain-free.
